Keep Your Fence Standing Strong and Looking Great—Year After Year
Your fence is one of the hardest-working parts of your property. It defines your space, protects your family and pets, and adds curb appeal to your home. But here in Northwest Florida, where the humidity stays high and storms are part of life, your fence needs a little extra care to keep it in great shape.
At Southern Select Fencing, LLC, we build fences designed to handle Florida’s weather, but proper maintenance is what keeps them looking fresh and standing strong for years. Here’s how to take care of your fence, no matter what it’s made of.
For Wood Fences
Clean It Once or Twice a Year
Use a garden hose or pressure washer on a low setting to remove dirt, mildew, and pollen. Avoid high pressure. It can damage the wood surface. A mild bleach-and-water solution (1 part bleach to 3 parts water) works well to remove mold or algae spots.
Inspect for Damage After Major Storms
Florida’s summer storms can cause shifting or minor damage. Check for loose pickets or rails, wobbly posts, and signs of rot near the ground. Repair issues early before they spread.
Reseal or Stain Every 2–3 Years
A quality sealant or stain keeps moisture from soaking into the wood. Choose a UV-resistant finish to prevent fading from our strong Gulf Coast sun. This dramatically extends your fence’s lifespan.
Keep Soil and Vegetation Away
Don’t let mulch or plants pile up against your fence. Trapped moisture promotes rot, and vines can pull pickets loose over time. Maintain a few inches of clearance at the bottom for airflow.
For Vinyl (PVC) Fences
Rinse Regularly
Vinyl fences love a quick rinse with the garden hose. Once every month or two is plenty to remove dust, pollen, and bugs. For tough stains, use a soft brush and mild dish soap, never harsh chemicals.
Inspect for Cracks or Warping
Although vinyl is tough, Florida’s heat can make panels expand and contract. Check connectors and posts to ensure everything stays tight and aligned.
Avoid String Trimmers Near the Base
Weed trimmers can scuff or crack vinyl if they hit the surface. Use edging shears or grass guards around the bottom for a cleaner look and longer life.
For Aluminum or Metal Fences
Wash Off Salt and Dust
If you live near the coast or along Highway 98, salt air can build up. Rinse your fence every few months to prevent corrosion.
Check for Loose Screws or Fasteners
Over time, vibration and weather can loosen bolts and brackets. Tighten them periodically to keep sections secure.
Touch Up Paint if Needed
Powder-coated aluminum rarely rusts, but small scratches should be touched up with a rust-resistant paint to keep moisture out.
For Chain Link Fences
Keep It Clean and Clear
Trim back any vines or weeds that start to grow through the mesh. They hold moisture and can cause rust.
Watch for Sagging or Rust Spots
Rust spreads quickly in humid air. If you notice corrosion, sand it lightly and spray it with a rust-inhibiting paint.
Check for Tension Wire or Post Movement
Florida storms can loosen tension along the base. Tighten fittings and realign posts as needed.
General Fence Maintenance Tips (All Types)
• Check after major storms—high winds can shift posts or loosen panels.
• Keep sprinklers aimed away—constant water exposure can speed up rot or staining.
• Trim overhanging branches—prevent damage from falling limbs during storms.
• Watch for insects—termites and carpenter ants love damp wood.•
Schedule professional inspections once a year—a fence expert can spot issues early.
